I’m so passionate about educating people on living with a gluten free diet for many reasons, one of them I truly am most passionate about is how it can effect and heal your gut’s bacteria. Why? Well gluten is a substance found in most of the commercial foods we eat today, which to me is kind of scary. Especially when gluten has been linked to a number of health problems, from weight gain to autoimmune dysfunctions, even right down to depression.
Living with a gluten free diet aids in reducing and eliminating exposure to gluten itself so that it’s adverse effects are minimized. However, there are still some ways that gluten from time to time may slip into our diets unknowingly. Over time this can cause some significant gut damage. Our gut’s are made up of billions of cells, as is the rest of our bodies. It’s through compounded gluten damage over time and other environmental damages such stress, poor diet, toxins and chemicals that our gut’s bacteria balance can be thrown out of alignment. Not only is this unpleasant, however it can also throw us off balance emotionally as well as physically.
You may wonder why it’s so crucial for ceoliac or gluten intolerance suffers to go on a gluten free diet. However it’s not so much about the gluten itself, but rather the effects it has on your internal organs and digestive system.
It’s not just gluten that can change the environment within your intestines but also medication. Things like antibiotics for example can cause certain microbiota to increase or decrease in number. This bacteria adjustment directly affects how certain food groups are metabolized and it also influences immunity functions. So you can see why I am so passionate about sharing with others the importance to a healthy, happy and healed gut. So let’s go over the 7 Reasons why Healing your Gut’s Bacteria is so important for everyone, not just those on a gluten free diet.
1. Our gut’s bacteria helps our system evolve and adapt to dietary changes. They take note of the kind of foods we eat and develop a recognition system for them so that they could easily accommodate digestive needs once the food is again introduced to the stomach. This type of functioning is one that can be genetically passed on to the next generation. Hence why some dietary allergy’s may run in the family.
2. Gut Bacteria can enhance bone mineral density by making sure that the minerals and vitamins required for bone breakdowns and formations are properly absorbed.
3. Gut Bacteria identifies anything that’s non-nutritious within our system, brakes it apart and removes it. This includes seeds, undigested grains, nuts and other substances. In some occasions, gut bacteria can also play a part in keeping bad elements from entering your blood stream like alcohol and drugs.
4. Naturally, our gut’s bacteria also controls pathogenic invasions and keep’s everything in check. Microbiota (a form of bacteria) are very territorial and they usually do not allow other strains to grow where they live – our gut’s. Nothing ever get’s past their approval and they do not cause illness unless in this case non gluten free nutrients or supplements interrupt their normal functions.
5. This is one of my biggest WHY’s in Gut Health. Maintaining a well balanced gut flora is essential for the synthesis of Vitamin B and Vitamin K. Vitamin B is crucial to energy creation, cell transport, carbohydrates and fatty acidsoxidation, amino acid metabolism, and blood cell production. Vitamin K, on the other hand, contributes to blood clotting functions and calcium metabolism and absorption.
6. In addition to the above gut flora has also been found to influence mood and insulin sensitivity by producing neurotransmitters and hormones (example, serotonin and dopamine). So a healthy gut means a happy body.
7. And if that’s not enough, intestinal microbiota has also been discovered to direct digestive processes as a “second brain” so that every organ and every single inhabitant involved can properly attend to the matter on hand.
How do we keep our gut’s well balanced?
As you can see keeping a healthy gut is very important. I don’t go a day without taking a Gluten Free Probiotic, however you can also balance your gut with things such as fermented foods, Kufir, Kombucha and other live multistrain bacteria’s that can also be found in some yoghurt cultures.

It provides me with gut healing, and all the support I need to process and absorb essential nutrients and minerals – all of which is important for optimal health and nutrition.
